I am running Windows XP SP2(fully updated) on a large Gateway FX400 PC, --and trying to install SP3 because of the upcomimg MS support change on July 13th.
Tried the download from Windows Update, and now just purchased an SP3 Installation CD from MIcrosoft, but the exact same problem occurs each time:
PROBLEM: the installation of the files proceeds OK, to about halfway thru the progress bar, when it enters the "Updating Registry Keys" phase, --where the installation then fails, with a small SERVICE PACK 3 SET UP "Access is Denied" dialog box.
I have tried several times, after completely uninstalling my Norton Internet Security 2010, Spyware Doctor 2010, and Registry Mechanic 2010 applications. I have no other security-protection programs left on the computer (except for CCleaner and Malwarebytes utility programs),that I could imagine might possibly be preventing or causing the access-denial problem when the SP3 Installation Wizard attempts to update the registry. --I am not aware of anything in Windows XP itself that might cause this either.
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone out there could offer any suggestions here, and especially if anyone knows of a direct phone number at Microsoft Corp. where they might provide help with SP3 Installation problems (I thought I maybe once recalled hearing of this?)
