Windows98 CD Player

Sep 19, 2005 10:47AM PDT

Hi there Computer Smart People,

For some reason when I am playing music through my computer in Yahoo, the sound from the CD Player is not working properly, I play my music through the computer and it is perfect to the people listening, however my side it is very low, if I turn the sound up so its perfect for me then its loud at the other end. I play by opening up my sound icon, clicking options, properties, options and tick CD Player, I never alter the settings so am at a loss to explain why this is happening.

Any ideas?

Tracey, Please Clarify...

Please explain exactly what you're doing so that both you and someone else are hearing different things...What do you mean by "playing my music through my computer in Yahoo"? The CD Player is meant to play music from the CD only...Do you have other media players and have you tried to use them? (Windows Media Player, Real Player, WinAmp, etc.?)

How are you listening to the music if you can "turn it up" and others are hearing it too loud? Are you using headphones while the others are hearing it through speakers? If that's the case, then it's normal...They generally aren't designed to be used at the same time and even if they can be, the levels are not easy to adjust simultaneously.

Which "sound icon" are you talking about? The one in the Control Panel or the speaker icon in the lower right corner?

Hope this helps and let us know more.

Further Clarification CD Player

Hi Grif,

I log into yahoo messenger, into chat and the music room I usually use, I listen through a headphone set. I put a cd in the cd drive, click the sound speaker icon on the toolbar, open the volume controls click options, click properties, click recording which brings up another volume control box I tick that, then go to start, programs, accessories, enterainment and cd player. When its my turn to play I hit the play button on the cd player, use my mic lock to hold down the talk button in the music room. I have never had to alter my sound, it has always been perfect but for some unknown reason that I can find, the sound quality for me and the people listening is not the same, if I leave my sound level at the same rate as I normally have in the past, the volume coming through my headphone is very soft, yet the volume is perfect for those listening. I have not altered or changed anything, so am at a loss to explain in this drop in sound quality. When I play just for myself through the headset its perfect only when I play in the music room does the sound drop my end? Can you or anyone help with a solution?

Tracey, Ok...

...So these "listeners" are somewhere else, on a remote computer, listening to your tunes over the internet. Is that correct?

It sounds like you're using the "Recording" settings to "listen" to the music while you're using the "Playback" settings to play your CD. Make sure the "level" is correct on both settings..On Windows 98, double click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner. When that loads, click on "Options" in the upper left corner of the window, then select "Properties" from the menu. When that loads, place a dot/tick in the "Playback" selection, then click on OK. You'll now see the "Volume Control" for playback...Move the main Volume slider to the desired level and make sure the "CD Player" level is appropriate. Now click on "Options" again, then "Properties" and place a dot/tick in the "Recording" selection, then click OK. You'll now see the "Recording" volume adjustments. Move the main Volume and CD Player control sliders to their desired levels.

If the above steps don't help, then I suggest downloading the most recent sound driver for your sound card/operating system combination, then install it.

Hope this helps.
