Windows10, new SSD computer won't shut down, wake up

I replaced the original drive (which did a serious crash and burn) with an SSD, and now I cannot shut down properly. I use the Shut Down option and the screen goes black, but the power button indicates it is still on.

Also, if I use the sleep or hibernate option, nothing wakes it up.

I have to perform a hard shutdown by holding the power button every time I want to use my laptop.

I am not technically proficient and would appreciate any help, in layman's language.

When you replaced the original drive with an SSD, that SSD was empty. What did you put on it, and how?
