Question

Windows XP wont come up due to errors???

Oct 29, 2012 5:41AM PDT

when I turn the computer on the following error comes up: windows root system32 hal.dll

I downladed Windows XP Professional Software on a dvd and inserted it in the laptop.I tried repairing but once it takes me into the command prompt and type:

C:ATTRIB - Theres an error

C:BOOTCFG /REBUILD - Error

C:CHKDSK - Specified drive is not valid (Theres a disk in it, and it says the same message for any drive I try to enter including C even though im on it?)

C:DISKPART - Brings upexisting partitions and undereath is Unpartitioned space - 476938 MB
I have one option of deleting it, another to create partition.

I also tried to reinstall Windows XP. While copying files over it had me skip alot of files such as camvid, shell.dll, etc. When it finished, it restarted then just tried doing the cd all over again and would not come on with out cd inside..

Ill take any advice PLEASE help me!!

Answer
Didn't know XP was on DVD.

That's an issue right there. Try an XP from Microsoft next. Those versions you download from the web are usually problematic and we can't discuss those here.

-> Also, no make, model and if there is a SATA drive involved so I can't tell you that it's the usual XP SATA issue. I don't write about that anymore as it's all over the web now.

Its a Dell
Windows XP Professional
Model Number: PP81L

Would that be able to tell you if its the usual XP SATA issue?

Sorry no.

But XP on new gear gets errors like you noted so I can't comment if it's the same issue. I didn't find a PP81L at dell.com

But given the SATA clue, you shouldn't have to read it from me about that.
