Windows XP won't log on.

Nov 23, 2004 6:12PM PST

I was browsing through websites a couple of days ago and it was crashing really bad so I switched the laptop off by the mains then was going to restart it. However when you switch it back on, you know it loads before going on to the main blue screen for you to log on, well it didn't go there, it kept constantly loading & loading and never done anything else, I've tried fixing it but there's nothing I can do, can anyone help me please??

Try booting in Safe Mode and use system restore to when it worked. Then get rid of viruses and other parasites.

If you cannot start in safe mode, then at the boot menu choose "last good configuration.."

I would suggest that you reboot the PC to SafeMode, then run your virus scanner (make sure your software has the latest signature file), run any adware/spyware software.

No offense but you sound like a PC user, not a techno geek. Trouble shooting XP can be a nightmare for the average user. I highly recommend that you check your library for Jim Louderback, "Microsoft Windows XP For Home Users" ISBN 0-7897-2651-3 or Mark Minasi, "Windows XP Professional" second edition. Both authors cover basic trouble shooting very well (especially Louderback) and explain how to get XP up and running again. Since your XP is loading to a point, you should be able to salvage your installation with the help of one of the above books.
