I don't have one - but thanks! It is an old laptop. I am just trying to trouble shoot a few things myself before I give up on it.

I am not getting that message. I get the screen where you have the options for safe mode - or go back to a previous setting etc and then Windows tries to boot and I get back to the black screen with the questions again. Thanks. It is an old HP larger laptop but was a good workhorse. Trying to save it.

That message can change from machine to machine. That repair and the old XP REPAIR INSTALL (see google) can sometimes fix a busted XP OS. In some cases you can't fix the OS because the user forgot to have spare accounts and imagine if you encounter the old XP CORRUPT PROFILE (see google) and there is no spare account?

Answer. Microsoft never supplied a fix for that scenario.
