Windows XP will not boot

I turned on my laptop few days ago and it displayed the following message: "We apologized for the inconvenience, but window did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this...." It then asks that I select one of five choices to start window - 1-safe mode, 2-safe mode with network, 3-safe mode with command prompt, 4-last known good configuration, and 5-start windows normally. I have tried each of these with no success. Choice #5 will bring up the XP logo and start loading but when the signal stops, the window goes blank and that's it. Please HELP.

Start with option 4, then go to System Restore and do a restoral before this started happening.

Good luck,

I am having the same problem. I have selected all 5 options and none are working. For each option, the computer appears to be rebooting as the "Windows XP" page pops up, but then it always goes back to the original screen displaying the 5 options.

System Restore will NOT work, as mentioned before, how can I do this when I can not even get to the point where I can select that option?

PLEASE HELP!! I'm using a Benq "tower", Intel Pentium 4

Thanks Happy

I have had a very similar problem. I can hit ctrl alt del and get the task manager (sometimes)and run a task but still cannot get the desktop.

I am sure my problem was caused by an infection but other than rebuilding the machine, I cannot think of a way to recover. Also, it sometimes insists in loading in safe mode, with mostly black screen but I can't then do anything.
