windows xp welcome screen stuck

windows xp welcome screen is stuck - malware - no virus - tune up utilities installed - supposedly clean up - problem still exists can only operate in safe mode - tried system restore - still problem - lucky to get on tonite - any help?

Any chance you ran a registry cleaner? Something you might try from safe mode is changing from the welcome screen to the classic logon screen to see if that works.

Thank You Steven, ran CCleaner registry and seemed to restart OK, we'll see if this problem continues once I shut down

I was wanting to know if you had done so just prior to your problem. Registry cleaners have been reported to break more than they fix. As for the welcome screen being stuck, I was wondering if you noticed this after attempting to log in as a user. User profiles can break and registry cleaners can break them. The idea of going to safe mode was just the beginning of trying to rule things out. We'd want to see just how far the startup would be successful. If safe mode OK, some startup process could be broken and we look for that. Just some troubleshooting techniques to start ruling things out but throwing a registry cleaner at the problem wasn't one of them. Sorry if you misunderstood.
