One of the main issues

Against moving off XP is the necessity of purchasing/buying new computing hardware, since older machines are not likely to run Windows 8 or 8.1 very well.

Then too, there is no direct upgrade path to 8 or 8.1 from XP as there is from XP to Vista. Not possible to upgrade from XP to Windows 7, a clean install of Windows 7 is required to get there. If XP to 7 does not work, then certainly upgrading XP to 8 won't work either.

Some find it irksome that Microsoft is pushing 8.1 instead of offering 7, there's that too.

Latest survey says XP still is in use, as of today, by 29.1% of known systems connected to the Internet. Not only are these users facing a problem, so is Microsoft, as well, if this number does not drop to 0% soon.

Running older XP systems can be done safely, but only if some version of Linux is installed and XP is tossed out the door by April 8th, 2014.

Yeah

Ya know. I was thinking this could be some kind of scare factor/marketing ploy too on MS's part.

Have a pop-up jump in your face and scare the pants off of people and have them rush out and buy something new.

A person if so inclined could dual boot that XP machine and keep their games and such but switch to the Linux partition for going on line or doing banking or whatever they need . If the HDD on the XP machine is small they can install a distro on a flash drive and have the best of both worlds.

End of support means what?
Mar 3, 2014 8:47PM PST

XP will not explode when support ends, neither will it suddenly cease to function.

As far as I can see, XP will continue to work on existing XP systems after end of support until the hardware fails.

Users can simply turn off automatic updates and continue using their OS. There is no need for them to upgrade if they don't want to.

Or what am I missing here?

Shouldn't turn off updates though

Good point

Yes I have to agree.

Makes it difficult though if this warning message is set to keep appearing monthly. If it is only designed to appear once, then that is not a problem.

It's all

a bunch of hype. If MS is protecting it for another year, leave everyone alone.

I dont see what the big deal is. its not like come 4/8/14 your pc will stop running.
I stopped doing the ms updates years ago and have never had any problems.
my XP it still - and will still keep running.
other sites are not going to shut us down, they only deal with the browser which
in my case is Firefox and there seems to be no notices that they will not support
us in the future. at least not that I have heard.
I even doubt that some pop up will be sent to me - since I dont go to any of their
sites - but who knows what little brother can do hahahaha
hmmm... think I have all pop ups checked as no !

That pop-up . . .
Mar 13, 2014 2:25AM PDT

was included in last Tuesday's updates. It's listed in the updates. Simply uncheck the installer. Or if you miss it like I did on my first XP Pro machine and it pops up, simply click the "Don't show this again" button and close the pop-up.

Got the pop-up on Saturday the 8th

I did not check "Don't show this again" box and it still hasn't happened but that one time.

Like I asked
Mar 14, 2014 9:25AM PDT

A couple of months ago on this forum, I asked why MS isn't doing such a thing since every XP user I knew hadn't heard anything about this. I was pretty well beat down in responses.

Bit S.

So far I've yet to see any successful upgrade from say a common 32 to 64 bit Windows. Weebly spam is common in the forums so we'll let you get a reply in here how you conquered what Microsoft could not.
