Windows XP two days in Recovery - Can this be right?

by BennFen / June 30, 2009 8:07 PM PDT

Dear All Experts and anyone who can help,
Have a big problem can't acess my main computer:Windows XP HP 3.5 3gb ram.

Yesterday after noon my computer kept stoping and starting; each time trying to open windows xp without sucess. I swithced it off a few times but it kept doing the same antics. After about an hour I decided to put in my start up disk. I was given three options 1) pres R' for Recovery 2)press F' format and reload windows and 3) press Q' t0 Quit. I pressed R' yesterday afternoon and the computer has been in recovery since then. It did go through the motions to Recover and left me with a greyish screen. Desperatly trying to get it started can anybody help-PLEASE!!! Will something eventually pop up on my screen? and will it happen very soon? Your help would be verymuch appreciated. Yours BennFenn!

Power off and try again.

Two days? Two hours is too long.

When I see that I know there is trouble.

The most common issue is a corrupt hard disk (or failing, failed.)

Since hard disks are so cheap we'll slip in a new drive pulling the old one out in case the owner didn't backup and restore the OS. If that corrects it what happens next is up to the owner.
