Windows XP to Windows 7 error.

Oct 30, 2009 11:17AM PDT

Hello, I am upgrading my windows xp to windows 7. I downloaded the student edition and converted it into an ISO, and booted from the disc. It gives me an error code 0xc000000f.
it also tells me that the error is because it "cannot detect a device needed to proceed."
I am running an AMD phenom II x4 3.0ghtz, 4 gigs of 1333 ddr3 ram, BFG nvidia 250 GTS (factory OC) gigabyte MA770T motherboard.

Any suggestions?

You can't upgrade from XP to Windows 7.

You have to do a clean (custom) install booting from that DVD. If you start with formatting the drive, it's rather irrelevant what version of what OS currently is on it, although it will be checked from an upgrade version of Windows 7.

I googled the error message you quote: http://www.google.com/search?q=install+"windows+7"+"cannot+detect+a+device+needed+to+proceed."
Unluckily, the only hit is your post (did you know google was that fast indexing our forums). So either you found a unique error, or it's not quite the right message.

I'm afraid this doesn't really help.

32 to 64?

Let me guess... you're upgrading from XP 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit, hoping to utilize that spiffy new processor? Unfortunately, you can't use the "upgrade" software for that. The Upgrade version WOULD work if you were to install Windows 7 32-bit. That's what happened to me at least, I inserted the 64-bit DVD on my XP system and got the "you can't upgrade like that" error message.
