Windows XP system slow down

I have windows XP Home edition
Service pack 3
Intel Pentium 4 CPO 3.00Ghz
512 MB of RAM
and in the last few weeks Mozilla firefox browser is very slow, all programs eg Word Excel Outlook take ages to open (and close)and I frequently get 'program not responding...' message. I have run Ccleaner, repaired registry, defragged the drives, scanned with Malwarebytes, Spybot and Avira, checked for driver updates - no issues found. I have reviewed start up programs, uninstalled unnecessary programs and CPU usage seems fine with nothing strange running in the background that I can see in the Task Manager. I have used 40.3 GB of disc space with 71.4 GB remaining. I picked up a recommendation in one of the forums to scan with Hijackthis which I have done but I am not PC literate enough to analyse it. I have copied the log below. Any ideas what could be causing this problem? I have tried everything I know of....so need help from the experts! Many Thanks

So this has an IDE hard drive?

Try the usual and to why, it's been discussed. Save me from repeating why.

Do this first -> http://winhlp.com/node/10

I will try to see what else can be done after you have completed this step.

DMA reset

Many Thanks for the advice. I ran the resetdma.vbs from the windows help article. I received this message:

The following ATA channels have been reset
Master of secondary IDE channel
Master and slave of primary IDE channel

Is there anything else I should do?

Not yet.

You didn't reveal if it helped. This forum does not read Hijackthis log files but I don't think that's it.

The DMA issue is well known and with that out of the way my thoughts are about the machine itself. The message is usually one of an old machine. Try this next -> http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11319_7-6240575-1.html

That's something we need to do yearly.

After that it sounds like a failing hard drive or other machine problem. Either way it is time to make sure that you won't lose your stuff if this machine dies.
