Windows XP screen savers

by meyersrt / September 6, 2008 10:17 AM PDT

Good evening! I'm running XP and I'm having some issues saving a screen saver. My wife has downloaded some third-party 3D screen savers and I tried to get them to work for her, but to no avail. When I go to the Screen Savers tab and select the screen saver I want, it allows me to apply and then I click OK. The screen saver never activates after the specified time. After going back into the screen saver dialogue box, the screen saver selected is now NONE (not the one I applied). It doesn't do this for the screen savers that came with the OS (e.g., mystify, marquee, etc.). I thought maybe it was an issue with the third party, so I downloaded the 3D XP screen saver from microsoft and got the same result. I have tried rebooting. I have tried doing it from another user. My system.ini file is not read only. What am overlooking? Much thanks in advance. RM

The rules to fire up the screensavers changed.

The other issue is sometimes its that wireless keyboard or such but as the security got tightened up, these things stopped working. Check with each screensaver's author to see if they issued an update.

I did read something on that. However, I am not using wireless mouse or keyboard. Where can I check the start up rules? Is that an XP setting or a third party setting. Also, if that's true, why did the XP 3D screen saver from MS do the same thing?

Figured it out

After some hunting, finally figured it out (with a little help). I removed the spaces from the screen saver file names and it fixed the problem. Go figure. Thanks! RM

careful about 3rd party screen savers as sooo much malware has been built in to so many of them (above & beyond any "just plain sloppiness" in making them). Always save & right click scan w/ AV & AS before opening/installing. Safe computing to you. Congrats again! Grin
