Important files? Don't repair. Get them out first.

While the error has prior discussions you would NEVER repair this until your files are safe.

I use a Live CD to get the files out BEFORE WE REPAIR.

There are too many Live CDs to list here but for XP users I suggest Hirens as it has a mini-xp and I use Ubuntu, Puppy Linux since I can boot those without installing them and copy files out.

Windows XP Repair Install Blue Screen Error

So what the message says is there no way to repair XP OS but taking of the files and doing fresh install?

For most, yes.

If XP was repairable then a repair install or install over the top would do but sometimes the OS is so damaged or the cause of the error has not been removed. The story is too light to dive into what it could be but we know that getting the files safe is job one.

Later we can talk about machine and OS repair.

Answer
Windows XP Repair Install Blue Screen Error?
Dec 10, 2013 4:54PM PST

Hi,

I wanted to thank everyone for the great information and discusion in this thread!

We have found that there is only one patch that requires un-installation to resolve the blue screen issue. KB977165 is the patch in question, the other patches do not seem to cause the blue screen behaviour and do not need to be uninstalled.

With that in mind, here's the updated solution steps:

1. Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console (see this Microsoft article for help with this step)

Once you are in the Repair Screen..

2. Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst

3. Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt

4. When complete, type this command: exit

Usually It's The Result Of Malware...
Dec 12, 2013 6:41AM PST

The patch you've mentioned is from about 3 years ago and if the problem only happened recently, then you may have recent malware-caused changes in your system files. Such things will cause blue screens or failures in repair installs. It's also why many simply perform a format and reinstall.. See the "Known Issues" section of the link below:

Hope this helps.
