What type of re-install are you doing?

Are you running the re-install whilst you're logged in or during POST?

I have seen that when it restarts

If the install CD is still in the drive. Try removing the CD when it reboots. If the CD is still needed, it will ask for it to be re-inserted.

If you had a virus problem, did you wipe the drive before the reinstall or just reformat it?

Thanks very much for your replies.Sorry Im new to this. I have formatted the drive without any partitions it copies across the files and then initializes them then says it is restarting and boots back into the cd rom setup. When I have taken out the cd before reboot I am sure it said windows xp installation was not complete.

I've had this problem before,

What happens when you exit out of the installation when you boot up?

In reply to: Hmm.

When I did it tried to boot from the hard drive presumably because Windows XP flashed up very quickly then the screen went blank.

Xp reinstall

In reply to: Windows XP Re-installation

Possible failing hard drive, memory, optical drive or corrupt partition due to virus.

Download Ultimate Boot CD

Burn to CD and run diagnostic on hard drive/memory.

If drive/memory pass write Zeros (full) to the drive.

Install of Xp will then proceed provided that
the optical drive is not failing.

Luck
