Windows XP quits

by sdboothe / June 21, 2009 2:17 PM PDT

I have an emachine T-4160 running windows XP Professional. I need to move files from this dinosaur to a new computer running Vista Ultimate. I can power up the computer (green light) and windows powers up (orange light) but shuts off before i can access anything to download or transfer. However, the green power light remains on.
Any ideas to keep windows XP running?

Have You Tried Booting Into

Safe Mode? It'll look funny Big Icons & Few Colors which revert in normal mode BUT it loads only minimum drivers etc so may by pass the problem long enough to off load. This assumes you know for sure it's
NOT an infection matter (where in offloading my send problems with it).

From safe mode you can also access "Event Viewer" which will show errors that might be source of problem. In viewer, highlight error item and select "properties" to see a short description of the error cause.

Hope this helps. Happy

Thank you for the reply - i have tried that and it shuts itself off b4 it can get there. I don't think it is an infection as i have antivira running and kept updated -when it ran. I think it is more that this computer was purchased in 2002 and is tired and it is sitting next to its replacement. Sad

In that case ...

the easy solution to get your files off is to buy a enclosure for your hard disk. Get the hard disk out of this PC, put it into the enclosure, connect that to your new PC and start copying. You might need to TAKE OWNERSHIP (google that if you get 'access denied' when copying).
It hardly can go wrong.

Thanks Kees that sounds like a reasonable solution for what I need to do.
