Windows XP Professional laptop

I have an old Windows XP Professional that I would like to wipe clean and then reuse. Is this an unsurmountable problem which would yield unsatisfactory results? I would use it for word processing and internet also.

word processing, and it's free. Current best distros for former XP users are

Mint, Zorin, Mageia, Kubuntu, and for less capable computers, Lubuntu, Mint XFCE, Xubuntu.
