Windows XP Pro to Windows 98

Nov 24, 2003 3:34AM PST

Computer
Celerom 566 MHz
Ram 256 Mb
Using Windows XP Pro at the moment.
----------------
My son installed XP Pro a while ago and I find the computer very slow with this IC and Windows XP Pro. Would it be hard to unistall XP Pro and install Windows 98. If possible, what is the best way to do this downgrade.
Thanks

Look in the control panel in Add/remove software. IF there was an uninstall for your XP, it would be there.

If not, the road back is well known but tends to be hard on most. You do have files and programs you can't lose ready to put back on the machine?

Even if it's on the menu, consider that installing ANY OS puts files on that computer at risk of vanishing. Secure what you can't lose first.

As to slow, XP will be slower than 98, and if your machine wasn't patched, then a WORM invades the machine and makes it even slower. What's not known to most is that today's antivirus programs do not stop the MS-Blaster, NACHI and those varient worms. You can use an online scan to see if such is there along with other PESTS. I collected the five tools I use in a piece called the Anti-Parasite Suite over at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0

Best of luck,
and write back when you have those files all secure.

Robert, I went there and did what is mentionned on this site:

Guest what, after I did what is mentionned on this site, the CPU usage went from 100% to about 15 to 20% usage, what a rise on speed. Thanks for your help, I will now keep Windows XP Pro and have no longer the intention on mouving to Windows 98.

Slow vs. CPU Usage.

These are similar, but not the same thing. When posting about such, try to tell as much as you can about the issues. To wit, the question was about how to go to 98 and not about improving Windows XP as supplied out of the box.

BE CAREFUL as some to the services you might disable will result in other unintended failures. A common issue is that some find that System Restore is disabled or Windows Update fails.

A sea-change on support of the OS now makes it imperitive that System Restore function. With System Restore (SR) now actually working, Microsoft and other support system lean heavily on it to repair simple issues.

WHY this is a big deal is that old-timers that would find and fix such are now finding that ROOT-CAUSE-ANALYSIS is not being performed. No one may be able to tell you what to poke or push to get your OS back to yesterday without SR.

Robert, sorry if I misleaded all. My main reason to go from XP-Pro to 98, was a slow operating PC. After I went to these links, I did what was mentionned on these links and my PC started working decent again. So I was trying to tell everyone, going from XP-Pro to 98 maybe is not the best answer.

I noticed that XP seemed slower on my 600 megahertz machine, but not enough to want to go back to the neverending BSOD's.
Another thing to think about is Microsoft will be ending all support for 98 soon.
