Presently there is no smooth upgrade path to 7. Currently it's a CLEAN INSTALL which means what you don't have a backup (which means 2 or more copies!) then your files are at risk.

You ask "How do I get these over to Windows 7 if I decide to change OS on my home unit???"

Same way this has been done for years. You copy them to DVDR/W, memory sticks, USB hard disks and other storage for safe keeping. ALWAYS more than 2 copies if you can't lose them.

If you want to be extra safe...

Backup your files to a fireproof location separate from your computer. If it is just a few Word documents and some pictures, DVDs will probably be suffice. However if you wish to move the entire contents of your computer, then an external hard drive might be in order. You might also consider encrypting the data on your backup.

Another option to look into is an online backup/storage solution like SkyDrive- not enough space for your entire computer, but 25GB is plenty of space for backing up files(or backing up a backup).
