Of course, I would open the case and re-seat all cabling but if that doesn't help, my next step would be to swap in a new hard drive. When enough sectors become "bad", a full format and install simply fails.
Hope this helps.
When I try to start windows XP i get a message that the file System in system32/config is damaged.
I tried to repair with the isntallationdisk, but when Im supposed to chose partition, there doesnt exist any. Just lots of "D: (no available disk)".I press enter - and get bluescreen.
alright, so I went to the restorationconsole(?) on the installationdisk, but I cant find the disk there either, just the same list with "D: (no available disk)" is shown, and I cant format any disk. after a while I get bluescreen here as well. So my thought is that the harddrive is seriously damaged (physically).
But then I try the linux ubuntu live cd, and it actually works and I can reach my disk "157 GB file system", and I could copy some files to a USB. So I try to format the disk via linux, but I cant find the disk via the terminal. I also tried to install ubuntu permanently, but that gave a rather cryptic error message.
What can I do? what is wrong? I just want to format the disk and get some OS on it.
