windows xp loads...but icons or taskbar doesnt show up

by SoilSymmetrySociety / March 25, 2009 3:05 AM PDT

this pc has been running fine lately, but as i turned on my computer this morning im welcomed to a problem which i cant find a fix for.

ill start you off with what im running:

AMD Sempron
Msi Mobo
2x 80 gb HDD (Master 50+ GB free, Slave 10+ GB Free)
512 MB Ram
500 Watt PSU
Windows XP Pro up to date

so i turn on my computer today and windows xp loaded but failed to play the usual start-up chime...then my wallpaper showed up but nothing else. the start button, task bar...desktop icons...none of them showed up. right now im running in safe mode. i restarted the computer a few times and the same thing happened...my wallpaper showed up but nothing else loaded. i cant use ctr alt del to bring up the task manager to run explorer.exe.

so i logged into safe mode and safe mode is working fine while im trying to find a fix. i used 2 different registry cleaners, scanned and immunized with spybot....didnt work. then i did a system restore to sunday...and it does the same thing. i also found on another forum some possible somutions...and one was changing 3 or so registry files but those files were already set to what they should be. i am virus free as well.

if it helps, my main browser is Opera...but i have firefox and google chrome as backups.

im not sure what else to tell you guys, so ill post a hijackthis log.

HijackThis logs not done here but ...
by Edward ODaniel / March 25, 2009 3:36 AM PDT

what you have described sounds like a corrupt profile (or a corrupt driver).

Since you can log in to Safe Mode do so with the Administrator account (Administrator is the name of the account) and create another user account. Shut down then try to log back on as the newly created user.

It could also be drivers so while in Safe Mode make use of the System Restore and try a restore point prior to the problem.

Looks like a uTorrent user?
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / March 25, 2009 3:46 AM PDT

It's odd to not find trouble when uTorrent or any such is on a machine.

That stuff is like "crack". Talk to the owner about dumping all the crack software like this. Move towards nothing but "safe" use of the machine.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
