Kman,

A little bit more information would sure help. You're not really clear...Is this a new computer or did you upgrade it to XP from a previous version of Windows? How much RAM does it have and if you upgraded the operating system, did you install the newest drivers for all hardware, such as audio devices and video cards, etc.? Since you just installed the Realtec network adapter, are you using a cable connection now or DSL? Did you visit the Realtek site and upgrade the driver?

Next, because Spyware and viruses can frequently cause these problems, please click on the link below and run the free programs listed by Bob Proffitt:

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0

Most importantly, how many programs do you have running in the background and have you tried shutting unecessary ones down in "msconfig" and limiting the number of "services" that are running. Do have any P2P programs like KaZaa running? Getting rid of this unnecessary stuff can stop a lot of the conflicts and eliminate the freezes and errors. Click on the links below and follow some of the suggestions made there:

Hope this helps and let us know more.'

What you should first do is get an education regarding computers. The second thing you should do since you already said it yourself is to get rid of the HP and build a computer yourself. The third thing you should do is switch to a Unix based OS.

Finally maybe you should skip the part about building your own PC and go buy a new Apple G5.

And after that...

You go back to a PC, load Linux, then decide everyone has it all wrong and then begin rewriting the kernal.

More directly about your issue, many of the HP machines don't run XP. Some might if one updates a BIOS, downloads megabytes of drivers and even this something simple like a clogged CPU FAN which Microsoft won't clean for you can cause it to crash.

Next, the WORMS that the OS you just installed will invade the machine when you connect to the internet.

Yes, I agree, it's a truly sad state of affairs, but it's never been better!

Although I've heard numerous complaints about XP I wouldn't jump to conclusions about the OS being the ONLY cause for your systems performance.
A lot of users overlook simple protection like antivirus and lately because of numerous "bugs" that get attached to perfectly innocent files you download
I have seen cause symptoms from freeze up of the system to resetting.
Have you downloaded all the required updates from Microsoft.com/security link?
Then be sure your antivirus program is current and brought up to date as possible. There have been numerous warnings in the news about worms attacking
Windows 2000 and XP users through recently discovered "holes" in the security.
Another thing that needs to be done to a computer on a regualar basis is simple maintenance , defragging
for instance. Something I find a lot of users overlook
for it is a given all computers slow down over time due to file fragmentation among other things.
And some more detail on your computer would be helpful. I'm presuming you obtained a fairly recent
model of computer with sufficient HARD DRIVE space and MEMORY - I emphasized these because they are a big factor in computer performance. Even an old system can gain some performance increase by upgrading these items.
Hope this information is helpful to you and your computer will function as u want it to.
