Windows XP hdd size limit

Hi there.
I am new to the forum, my question, i have an old e machine i like, its dated by today's standards.
I would like to put a 160gb parallel ATA ide drive in it, its currently got a 40bg drive in it.

The MB is an old trigem board, the CPU is 1.5ghz P4, the Ram is at the maximum of 1.5gb sdram PC 133.

What i was trying to find is the way forward for the system to support the larger drive, ive not installed it yet, but plan on doing so, my PC knowledge is average i would say, so i am not an expert.

The machine is a favorite of mine, it runs ok now, but the drive size is limiting as is the spindle speed, i was looking at a faster spindle speed, 7200 maybe, i know the system is ATA 100, would the system take an ATA 133, and ideas as how to fix the hard drive size limit.

At the moment its running on XP professional sevice pack 3 all updates are current and installed.

Ideas appreciated,

I have done what you want to do and the machine works fine. I have an emachines T-1220 (bought new in 2002), 1.2 gh, 20 gb hdd, with 384kb RAM running Win xp sp3. 2 years ago I replaced the 20 gb with a Western Digital ATA 160 gb hard drive (I should have the RAM like you have but haven't gotten around to it). I never partitioned the hard drive either, so it's one big drive. It takes awhile to "scan" it if there is a virus or what ever. I 've never had a problem with memory, finding anything, bad sectors etc.. I works like the "stock" one. Processing is slower because of my lower RAM, but
you should be fine with your 1.5gig.
I say go for it. Oh, by the way, i did it myself.

Forget the Service Pack that is installed.

That does not matter here. Look at your XP CD and what Service Pack it's at. If just XP, then the install limit is 127GB for C and after it's installed you install a service pack to gain access to drive space over 127GB.

There is ZERO CONCERN or issue about spindel speed or ATA speeds. That does not need to be discuess.

It's too bad we only know it's a Trigem board and not that it's some HP machine.

Its an old emachine 730, about 2002 i think, its just an old machine i like.
Call it posterity , yes its dated and a low bandwidth processor.

I thought the size of the drive was limited to the bios date and the OS , i read somewhere 137 gb for XP before 2000, but read somewhere else it might be 40 gb limit, and a bios update would be needed, as for disks i don't have any, i would instal the hard ware, and let my local IT shop reinstall XP for me, but my question was would it be ok, as in working terms for me to put the larger drive in, then let the IT shop install windows XP for me, i would create a recovery disk when up and running.

So in a word if i put 160 gb drive in, and informed the IT shop would they be able to install the OS and create a partition for me, would the shop need to update the bios ?, if one existed for the MB.

Questions i don't have all the answers to yet.

XP before 2000?

That's news to me. Service Pack 1 was released on September 9, 2002 so it's likely the OS limit is 127GB.

If you put in 160 let's hope the shop will swap it out if it doesn't work out.

There appears to be no documents I can use for such a machine. You'll have to try it.

Yes sorry your right, ME edition in 2000, ok so my limit theoretically should be about 120gb hdd, that should be ok, do you think ? .

Driver dates for the current hdd 40gb are, 01/07/2001, version 5.1.2535.0 , this is the machines original hdd.

A copy of the CPUZ if that helps.

Hi again Bob.
I was hoping someone would know from the info in the CPUZ M board detail and other info that is in there, and no i dont understand all the binary etc, but the detail is there.

Any way thats why i joined to ask questions like my original first post, and answer a few maybe from my limited experience, but growing all the time, hoping someone out there among the thousands might know, still its only been up a day or so, but i will Google for some more ideas, thanks Bob.
