Windows XP going crazy and crashing often (no viruses!)

MY WINDOWS XP SP3 IS CRASHING EVERY HALF HOUR. SHUT OFF DIOLOG IS TRANSPARENT AND FRAGMENTS OF WORDS ARE NOT VISIBLE. THE icon labels have a black glow and i cant run any programs until i restart it and it happens 30 minutes later. Im forced to use safe mode and run scans and so far no viruses. Im sre theres something wrong with the registry. Every time i restart, it has that old windows xp window. HELP HELP i need help!!!! I am sure this is WinXp, not Vista or Seven. Windows Xp does NOT have aero, glow, or transparency features. HELP me with this....
