Windows XP Folder Association!?!

Nov 1, 2004 6:54AM PST

I've done something to the folder association thing in the control panel, and now everytime i try to open a folder, it opens in a new window! I've checked the box that says "open folders in same window," but I am still experiencing the same problem. Any help is appreciated!

I don't think file association has anything to do with Windows Explorer opening different windows.

Try this.

Right click the Start Menu button and click "Explore".

Click the Tools menu and then clck "Folder Options". Under the General tab and in "Browse folders", is the "Open each folder in the same window" selected?

Sorry m8, I've just come back to this.

I was going to bump it up to the top of the list anyway, see if anyone else had any idea, but I tried a search at Microsoft.

I couldn't find anything in their Knowledge Base, but in their Community Newsgroups I did find something that might work.

Boot up in Safe Mode, and then try Windows Explorer. Open a folder and see if a new window opens. If so, check Tools > Folder options as before, clear the "Open each folder in same window" option and click apply, try Windows Explorer again, then return to Tools > Folder options and re-enable the "Open each folder in same window".

If that works, reboot.

If the problem re-occurs, you may have to refer this to Microsoft at http://www.support.microsoft.com/windowsxpsp2

But I hope that helps.

I don't know how to boot into Safe Mode on this computer. I've done it with other computers, but this one has, apparently, a different booting configuration. The computer starts up REALLY fast and I've tried it's options: [esc] for changing the boot sequence, [f2] to enter SETUP(the blue screen), and [f12] lets me boot with a LAN connection or sumthin.

I'm using a COMPAQ, Presario 2100 with Windows XP SP1.

thnx

On a Compaq it is F10 you hit to get into safe mode.
If the computer boots up to fast start tapping F10 after powering on it should take you to a black screen with options to open in Safe Mode. Hope this helps

thnx guys, the safemode thing didn't work although i did manage to get into safe mode. i kinda got around this problem by downloading 2x Explorer, which replace Windows Explorer which was apparently having problems. thanks anyways.

Thanks for the tip. I did actually have that problem but ever since i switched to Xplorer2, i've loved it and i don't want to switch back. Now, since we're on the topic of registry editing... i was wondering if anyone knew how to make Xplorer2 the default app to open when you click on My Computer on the desktop. I've managed to do it for the folders and drives, but not "My Computer." Thanx again.

Hi again ping,

I've never heard of Xplorer2 so I don't know what configuration options it has.

But it seems to me that My Computer being part of the Windows Shell I doubt if you will be able to change it's default opening from Explorer.

However there are some other Explorer utilities out there, whether they would change the My Computer proerties I don't know.

Is there a way you can configure Xplorer2 with command line switches to open up a My Computer type window? If so, you could place a shortcut of that on your desktop to work instead of My Computer. (But you would still not have the Properties options of My Computer).

i've tried configuring it but the options it has is scarce. i've currently selected "save state when closing program" so that it remebers what folder window it was in last time. the prob is that if you open My Computer or the shorcut i put on the desktop, it opens it in the saved state. if i don't check "save state when closing program," everytime it opens C:/ drive. i understand it's hard to give advice on a program that you're not familiar with so thanx.

by the way, my name's Mark Wei and not Ping. haha, i play ping-pong so that's why my ID is pingpongboss
