Hi,
I suffered pretty fatal windows problems recentley and i used the windows recovery console to help repair them. I can't remember exactly how to do it so i browsed a bit to be able to help you. While browsing, i found this link which has a direct reference to your problem and how to resolve it using the windows recovery console.

I also have a Dell computer and the reinstalation disk will be just as good as the operating system disk they talk about in the article.
The article itself is a little confusing so if you need anymore help just post back :d
Hope this helps,
Greeney
My XP desktop showed this message when I started the computer:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"
I don't have a clue what to do. I am not an experienced computer user. I have a Dell Dimension 4400. It is a few years old. I looked thru my original CD's. I have a "Reinstallation CD-Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" CD.
I put that CD in and re-started. Nothing happens. No matter what keyboard button I push, the same message appears.
Any help would be so appreciated!!! Thanks.
