Windows XP does not shut down automatically.

Mar 8, 2004 10:52AM PST

Recently, after I have re-installed Windows XP Professional, my system cannot be shut down automatically with Windows and I have to manually use the On/Off Power Button. I have tried all possible ways that I can think of but this problem still exists. Any suggestions as to what could have caused this? My system configuration is as follows:

CPU : Intel Pentium P4 2.4B
Motherboard : MSI 648 Max
OS : Windows XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 1
Rams : 2 X Kingston 512MB DDR 333 Cas 2.5
Harddisk : 40Gig Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm.
60Gig IBM 7200rpm
Display : ATI Radeon 9200 128MB DDR Ram
Power Supply : ATX-350W-C V-Spec PIV(Twin Fan)

It sounds like you will have to enable the "advanced power options" in the BIOS. If that doesn't work, go to your Mobo's website and get the latest BIOS update. MSI does have excellent documentation of flash procedures for BIOS upgrades for most all of their boards. Make sure you get the correct BIOS for your mobo and MSI does have guides to locate the model number of your board.

I had the same problem. Go to your Bios and go to Power. Make sure that all things like hibernate are disabled. Then boot up and go to windows. Go to Control Panel and choose Power Options. go to advanced and make sure that "When I press the power button on my computer" is set to shutdown. Go to Hibernate and make sure that Hibernate is unchecked. This should cure your problem.
