Windows XP directories keep being reset to read-only!

May 19, 2005 4:21AM PDT

I cannot set any of my directories to read-write. I am an administrator of my WinXP Pro SP2 system. I use the properties dialog box to clear the r/o box and apply the change. When I re-enter the dialog the directory is back to read-only. Is there policy or something else that I am missing here??

Which directory?

Some should be readonly. And is this on some CDRW media?

I have tried "C:\Program Files\Borland\CodeWright", an application, and "C:\Documents and Settings\Flory.PUCK\Application Data\CodeWright", which I created. I cannot remove the r/o flag on either directory.

That's a different issue, isn't it?

Here's the reason. You may not "own" that directory or have "rights" to do such a change.

Try this. Take ownership and then make the changes.

Tried it, no luck.

I am the owner of the "current settings" directory. To add mystery, when I add "attributes" to the explorer detail view of the parent directory it shows no flags set. When I look using properties the box is checked. Perhaps the properties box is showing something else?

When I see this, I move to the command line.

Use both ATTRIB and CACLS to explore the ownership and more.
