I have to wonder why a disk imaging and backup application would have over-written the MBR. Since the MBR is on the XP partition perhaps a simple System Restore would have restored that, but I confess I don't know.

The other strange thing is that you 'closed down' the computer, came back to it later and found it was in sleep or standby mode. I don't understand that either.

But where are you with this now?

Do both XP and Ubuntu boot up?

Does Avira anti-virus and Zonealarm firewall work well together without causing issues?

At the end of the day if the whole system works with no issues then I would put this down to a "Windows thing". We see those often here.

application, in this case Keriver 1-click, your best bet is to contact the publisher also you haven't told us the actual version you installed and they have different options).

On their web site ( http://www.keriver.com/ ) they state -
"If you have any questions about Keriver Products, don't hesitate to contact us at support@keriver.com "

The Documentation for Both the Pro version and the Free version show that upon booting the computer you should see a boot menu that offers a choice of booting normally, restore a snapshot, boot a specific OS (may offer both if dual booting), restart the PC, and Power off the PC. Do you not get this complete menu?
