windows XP boot disk

May 19, 2005 12:11AM PDT

Is it possible to burn a windows XP pro boot CD that will let me access the recovery console and replace corrupt startup files?

My windows installation is corrupted, wont start, and I dont have access to my windows XP pro cd.

Thanks

Where is your XP CD?

When you find your XP CD, then the repairs begin. Knoppix can write to NTFS, but I will not share which version or how. It's an experts only item and if you ask, then its best you don't know.

-> For now, use Knoppix and many K3b to drag out what files you can't lose.

Ok

Again, my windows disk is at home, approximatly 2 weeks away. I dont really care about having to wait that long, but I just figured if it was possible to have a normal comptuer before then, why not try. I dont want to corrupt my drive, so i wont try running any of the linux NTFS software. (I presume you meant Captive NTFS, etc.)

Yes. Captive NTFS.

The latest KNOPPIX removed it because too many didn't read the warnings. A shame really since if you follow the writings about it, you have a very clear idea of when its safe to use. Said writings can't be duplicated here and are on many sites out there.

Bart PE

A friend recommended that I use a Bart PE disk. Does this install anything to my drive or run alot like knoppix does? Would this be safe for my harddrive?

BARTPE just boots and runs.

Much like knoppix but has only a handful of some generic drivers. Fairly safe, so try it. It doesn't fix the failed XP install so don't get you hopes up it will do that.

didnt recognize my harddrive
May 26, 2005 12:17AM PDT

Well I tried making a bart PE disk, i had to slipstream it with service pack 1 (i dont know if the reason it didnt work was that my old harddrive had SP 2) It booted fine, but it wouldnt recognize my harddrive. I used the same drivers i used to get the windows recovery console to work with the card, but it gave me another I/O device error, it cant read the drive. Oh well, i just hope that a windows repair install will be able to see the drive. Strange though, as knoppix can access all of my data but cant write.
