Windows XP

May 16, 2004 10:34PM PDT

Morning,
Recently I've upgraded my PC from Win98SE to WinXP. I'm till learning the ropes with XP but it seems to be doing well for me with one exception.
When I surf, I sometimes want to print a topic after reading it. On a number of occasions which using Internet Explorer,I've tried to print a selection and nothing happens. Then, after waiting a minute I click CTL-ALT-DEL and the task manager informs me that IE is not responding.
Always when this happens...after I end the task and get ready to shut down the computer, I get an error box that pops-up indicating "Socket Notifiction" (There's the blue bar that builds at the bottom with the ubiquitous XP notification of "you can end now...or end later. Never saw this on 98SE)
What is this and what should I check to make sure I have the OS and my peripherals communicating properly?? Also, XP indicates at the beginning of every session that a number of drivers have been disabled by the system. When I check the only ones are for the Roxio products which I really don't use. How can I correct this?
Thanks folks,
Ken Johnson

Windows XP (for your Subject title)
May 16, 2004 10:47PM PDT

Your subject title needs a little improvement. The forum is about Windows XP, so selecting a title so a person will think "I know that one" is a good idea. Spend a moment to craft a good title. Imagine if all posts used "XP" or "Help!"

Your issue "smells" of a parasite or worm infection.

As supplied XP is open to the worms and has no protection from parasites. Even with an Antivirus, the parasites still have free reign in IE/OE. Microsoft has not shown any interest in curbing this non-virus plague.

Please consider using another browser most of the time so you are not in the line of fire.

What version of Roxio, if any did you install?
May 17, 2004 12:54AM PDT

Did you do a clean install or upgrade? If you had the old ezcd creator from 98 that will not work on XP it messes the system up. Do install the patches for the sasser and blaster worm right away as just being on the net can get you had by them worms. Also for the Internet Explorer you can try the sfc(system files checker.

Hello to all and thanks for the advice!
Rob Proffitt has helped me in the past and thanks especially to "trytohelp" who has maybe keyed into another area of concern.
First let me ask a question....I'm using Norton's Personal Firewall & Norton's AntiVirus autoprotect. I'm actually quite frightened and hesitant about downloading anything because of viruses etc!!! How can I get "infected" with all these working blockers??? Am I just really dumb when it comes to computing? What do I do to get rid of a worm etc?
Next, this was a full system install via a major computer store's tech support group. Previously I had Win98SE, and as Rob will tell you in 2 years I had 2 major crashes which were caused by a) a lightning strike, and b)who knows!!...but each cost me a couple hundred bucks to fix. This was a full Windows XP Home Edition install.
Next, to reference "trytohelps" message...EVERYtime I boot my computer I get a message over the task bar section saying that variuous drivers could cause the system to become unstable. So, I diligently open the box and review everything. I've downloaded and installed ALL the XP updates and patches. But there always remain 4 ROXIO upgrades that always appear. PLEASE tell me something...do I HAVE TO use Roxio? I'm use the Windows Media Player for all my mp3's, but I burn CD's using HP CD-Writer. Do I have to use the Roxio stuff??
To be honest I feel like the grandfather on "Moonstruck"....when asked what's wrong he says "I'm so confused!"
Thanks again for everyone's help! Please bear with me on this...I gotta get to a point of understanding or I'll go nuts!

"Socket Notifiction" is a typical SPYWARE indicator.
May 17, 2004 11:54PM PDT
http://www.google.com/search?&q=%22Socket+Notification%22+SPYWARE finds some instant discussions about spyware or what I call parasites.

No matter what commercial or free Antivirus or Firewall you have, none tackle this area since most, if not all spyware is not viral. "It's not a virus." - Symantec employee.

It's my choice that my machines do not allow any item found by Adaware, Spybot, Cwshredder or Housecall. These tools are free and discussed often in the Security Forum.
