WINDOWS XP

I have windows XP SP1 Vanilla (no updates). This is an upgrade from windows 98. though I have some driver updates, it should be running a full speed...ish. Problem is the my laptop @500mhz is struggling, is there and way of speeding up xp on older systems or can you strip it down, and what are the trade offs. If speed is paramount should I consider a less intensive OS, back to 98 or across to LINUX (Redhat/SUSE).
