General discussion

windows won`t start

Sep 10, 2004 6:49AM PDT

The background
Running xp Home edition with sp1
Only anti virus was Mcafee online virus scan that came with the Dell machine.

The problem
Last month I downloaded pestpatrol trial from a link on Dell home page. When that expired I suddenly had a prob with a browser hijacker.
I tried to down load a trial from Mcafee and it seemed to load Ok except when I tried to run it. I got message "some components of Active shield are missing... Please reinstall" I did! Multiple times! Same thing!
I did finally download a cw shredder to cd from another machine that took care of the hijacker. At least I think so! Then other things happened.
I tried to update to sp 2, download froze on last mb.
Tried to download ad-ware..seemed to down load but wouldn`t run. Same with trial from Norton! When I tried to use printer I got message that I didn`t have Admin priviliges.
Now the computer stops at start up giving me message
"Winlogon.exe-unable to locate componet Application failed to start because Comdlg32.dll was not found"

Now what?

Bob,

I recommend fixing one problem before installing and moving on to something else. The errors can become compounded and troubleshooting is difficult.

It's always a good idea to UNINSTALL the previous antivirus program before installing something new. Did you do that? If not, then I recommend uninstalling ALL of the antivirus programs before attempting to reinstall a new one. AFter the uninstall of all programs, download a run the McAfee Stinger tool from the link below. Although it won't find every type of virus, it will find most of the worst and will clean things up:

McAfee Stinger Download Link

Read the link below for an article about your error message and a possible fix:

Error Message: The Comdlg32.dll File Cannot Start

Hope this helps.

Grif,

I did try to uninstall what I had down loaded. I used the add/remove feature. Some times it worked and other times no. Somtimes I was successful right clicking the program icon and clicking uninstall on drop dwn menu.
Now I can`t get in at all. I tried starting in safe mode and worked thru all options to start in that screens menu. Always ends with the same error message. I never get to a c prompt to try entering any thing as suggested in the linked article.

Grif, I`m thinking I should just try to reinstall xp from my recovery disk.

Bob,

In your case, that might be the best procedure at this point. Sometimes, it's better to start from scratch.

With most Recovery disks, place the CD in the drive, restart the computer and it will automatically run. It should give you options to do a simply "repair", or do a full format and restore. In your case, I believe it's better to do the full format and restore because it will get rid of all the junk that was placed on the machine and put the computer back to the factory condition.

Hope this helps.

These forums. And your email-address.
Sep 14, 2004 9:58PM PDT

L7James,

The idea of these forums is that they are a place to help each other and to learn from each other. Going into private interaction via e-mail isn't encouraged. Better communicate via the forum.

It's not necessary to mention your email-address in a post. Unless, of course, you want to risk to get still more spam than you get already.
Every forum member can mail another member by clicking on the name of the adressee in a post (opening his personal page) and click on 'email this member' button, as long as that person has given permission for being emailed in his profile. That mail is being sent by "cnet", so all email-adresses are kept private until you decide to disclose them to somebody else to start a private communication. So update your profile to use this feature.

You seem to be a new member, with only 4 posts. I hope you don't mind my telling you some particulars.
