Windows wants to update everytime

Jun 6, 2009 9:34PM PDT

For the last few days everytime I go to shut off my computer I get a message that windows has an important update. I did click on it to do the update and when I went to sign off the next time I again got the message so clicked to update again. It tells me that the update was done and my computer shuts off.

5 times yesterday I tried it and everytime I go to shut off the computer the message is there that Windows needs to update. Can anybody tell me why I keep getting this message when I already did the update?

I even disabled all parts of my Avast AntiVirus before I shut it down in case that was causing the problem. Did the Windows update, computer shuts down, started it up again, enabled my Avast AntiVirus and when I went to shut it off the message was there again. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In IE, choose Tools>Windows update and check the installation history. The first page should contain quite a lot of the same failures. Please tell which update it is.
Then check c:\windows\kbxxx.log (xxx is the 6 digit number) and tell if it gives any reason for the failure.

KB954430 doesn't show. It goes from KB954211 to KB954600. I went through the list and they go in numerical order and it is not there.

Thank you so much for your help. It worked. The people on here are absolutely fantastic. This is my first computer and I am in my 60's so am pretty computer illiterate. The help I have gotten from people on this forum is greatly appreciated.

But we could because you helped us to help you by giving a clear answer to our questions. Without that it would have been impossible.

Half the work (or all?) is you getting out and helping (yourself.)

Glad to see you may have cured it.

Bob, I was getting ready to bang my head on the keyboard...

...for missing an important update. Then I remembered that I installed Vista Service Pack 2 and therefore am OK.

How easy it is to create a "problem" when no problem exists... Wink
