Windows Vista with IE 8

I find IE 8 works well once you get used to a few peculiarities. One thing I have not yet fathomed is when I save text from a newspaper and paste it into a file in My Documents it comes out with all the HTML tags, as though it it is trying to save it as an HTML text document. I have to delete all the tags as I just want plain text.
Has anyone an answer to this please?

What happens if

you just highlight and copy the text off the web page, then paste it into Notepad or your word processor instead of 'saving' through File > Save as ?
