Windows Vista vs. DVD/CD-R driver ? CODE 39

Apr 21, 2007 12:20PM PDT

I have a brand new Toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium op. system. The DVD/CD-R shows two parts in the device manager, I went there because the drive quit reading anything,I am self taught, so please bear with me. In the DM it tells me that the Hatachi HTS541616J95-A00 (or DD)ATA devise is working properly. For the Matshita DVD-R UJ-8505 ATA device it says "Windows can't load the device driver for this hardware.Driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39).
Does anyone out there know what this means? The computer is not a month old, could it be a Vista problem? What could have caused this and how can I fix it? Please help.....

go to toshiba support site on the internet
May 4, 2007 4:50PM PDT

look for your model in the download area, down load the fix for the dvd and any new updates.

If that does not work call 1-800 ask for help

My first A105s2081 had a bad dvd drive, i got a new laptop
since it was less than three days old.

make sure you use burned disks that are burned with a speed
same as your cd/dvd rated speed.

Hi,
I was having the same problem yesterday and after searching around (including this site) I found the solution at

http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=197341

I tried all other possible solutions including system restore but nothing worked so I tried the solution below from the website posted above and now everything works perfectly well again. I am always a bit squeamish about playing around in the registry but this was a breeze to do. My OS is Vista and my laptop is only 6 months old and this error happened after trying to do upgrades my mp3 software.

Hope this is helpful for you.

Cheers

A Heartfelt Thanks from Canada!

Your clear and concise recipe for fixing this problem worked flawlessly. I have spent a week searching the Microsoft support site for help. Useless. And tons of denial. Even their troubleshoot utility is useless. Go searching for the exact words of the error message on the MS support site and you won't find it.(Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (code 37) )

Like thousands of others who all of a sudden discovered that their CD/DVD player disappeared from the radar screen, I was at a complete loss for an answer...and I work for a major IT company (not Microsoft) and consider myself reasonably literate technically.

Thankfully, I kept my old XP machine running. Downstairs, an old Windows 98. Vista has been a nightmare.

To all of those who were just as nervous as me about screwing around int the Vista registry, follows this persons advice exactly as written and your life with Vista can resume....at least until the next surprise. Seriously consider backing up (exporting) your registry as an extra measure of caution. I needed a fix so bad I skipped this optional export step. In hindsight, because I am a conservative, low risk-taking Canadian, I really should have take the time to do it.

YOUR FIX WORKS!

I'm with the Canadian dude -- you're fix works and I really appreciate the help. I'm a systems analyst and couldn't figure it out with regular help and support but they were very close!

When you're having the issue where the drive is missing or corrupted, Vista actually had a good (almost) help path -- start, help and support, cd's and dvd's, windows does not recognize my cd or dvd drive. Right on top it says if you're getting code 39 error to go to step 4 which is the deletion of the upper/lower registry filters. They instruct to export and save a back-up copy and then there's a link to delete the filters but it doesn't do anything.

Following your path, opening the right folders and deleting as you say did the trick. I restarted and it was all good after that.

Many thanks

Take or give ownership to those keys.
Jul 2, 2008 12:12AM PDT

You may miffed here but there are PERMISSIONS and OWNERSHIP (rights) to the registry keys. I find it easy to do but some are a little upset that it becomes technical to do this.

Try a simpler method. boot SAFE MODE and try it in the Administrator account.

Thank you so much, I followed all the steps that you listed to fix this problem and it worked. I tried calling tech support earlier and they tried a few things and then just dismissed my problem. Thanks again, I can now enjoy burning cd's and dvd's. This must be a constant problem with Windows Vista. I hate it and wish I could go back to XP.

Thanks again!!!
