Windows vista USB problems

Jul 11, 2009 4:37AM PDT

My sister has a and old computer (Pentium 4HT @2.4 ghz, Asus p4p800vm motherboard,Nvidia geforce 6800, etc) and we instated windows vista home premium on it about 6 months agao. But just recently we started experiencing USB problems, meaning no matter what device on what port vista wont see the device. Then when i open the device mangier and scroll down to usb it has an exclamation point with "unknown device" next to it. When i plug a device in on any other computer it makes the "duh ding" noise but on her computer i hear the "device disconected" noise played on top of the "device connected" noise! I dont know what else to do. ive allready tried tried to update the usb main driver in the device mangier but it said that the best driver was already instaled. should i just scrap Vista and instal Windows 7 RC? please help!

Probably won't help

Probably won't help. Simple fact is, USB ports aren't that durable. They go bad all the time, and while they don't usually all go bad at once, it's not out of the question.

Installing Windows 7 RC will likely not do a thing to resolve this, as it's likely a hardware issue. The only thing that will fix it is a motherboard replacement.

Two things or ideas.

1. "update the usb main driver in the device mangier"

Funny. I call it the device mangler. But that has yet to work since 1995 so do the motherboard driver updates the old fashioned way.

But first.

2. Try the rear USB ports that are on the motherboard.

i treid the rear ports on the motherboard...

i personaly think that this is a driver problem so ill use a live cd of ubuntu to determine if it is hardware or software that is causing the problem.

I had the same problem. Just deleted the "unknown device", and rebooted. Vista found the USB ports, and installed drivers.

There is a possibility that it is the USB ports being damaged or worn out. Check the ports to see if the metal contact leads have been worn down or off, or if they are bent. Also if the plastic spacer or the grounding shield becomes damaged, that will affect getting a secure fit, thereby possibly causing the problem with the "device added" and then "device removed" at the same time. If it is a software issue, you could probably get a bit more detailed help over at the official Windows Vista Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/d5r9v3 . They are usually pretty quick to anser and have good info provided you give them all the information they need to answer the question.
