Windows Vista to Windows 7 upgrade

by ipod59874 / July 26, 2009 11:52 AM PDT

I'm buying a Macbook Pro in the next few days and my only drawback is that I want to have Windows 7 in Boot Camp. I think I can just go to a local retailer or Amazon and buy a FULL retail copy of Windows Vista and then get the free upgrade to Windows 7. Maybe I'm completely wrong about this one. Note: I was thinking of getting Windows Vista Home Premium. Thanks for any help you can give me.

No free upgrade...
by John.Wilkinson / July 26, 2009 2:55 PM PDT

Microsoft has stated that retail copies of Windows Vista are not included in the upgrade promotion. That only applies if you buy a new computer with Windows Vista preinstalled and the manufacturer is participating in the promotion. Thus, unless Amazon chooses to give away free copies of Windows 7, you'll be better served by pre-ordering Windows 7 instead.

See this link for more details on free upgrade options for full retail copies of Vista purchased after June 26th, 2009: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/upgrade-option.aspx

Once you open that link, go down to "Love your current PC?" In the fine print, click on the hyperlinked 'from Microsoft' for full details on this offer.

I've been told such offers were limited to new computer purchases a few times over the past two months through the MVP channels. Seems there was a little confusion there, as that public page clearly shows the promotion does exist. In this case, certainly happy to be wrong.

Cheers.
