Windows Vista shut down/restart

Jul 17, 2007 11:22PM PDT

Hi,

I'm experiencing a serious problem with Windows Vista. I read on different forums that many people have the same problem. Here is the problem. Windows Vista takes for ever to restart or shut down. Sometimes I have to do it the old fashioned way, i.e press the reset/restart button. It keeps showing "Shutting Down" and nothing happens. Microsoft denies there is such a problem. Any help will be appreciated.

Intel Core 2 Duo
Windows Vista Home Premium
1 GB RAM
320 GB HD

My best regards to you all.

rapheek... Same thing happening here...

Using the same operating system as you this has been occurring since the July Windows Updates were installed last Tuesday.

Sorry that I do not have a solution. I have ceased trying to solve all the Windows Vista issues... would be no time for anything else if I followed and tried to fix all the bugs and other issues.

My friend I wish you the best but am not optimistic!

Hi glenn30,

Thanks a lot for your message. Last Tuesday you mean yesterday? I'll try to do a system restore prior to that day.

Thanks

A Few Things To Try..
Jul 18, 2007 12:47AM PDT

If you haven't already, try eliminating some of the unnecessary startup programs and services which can cause the computer to freeze or be slow on startup and shutdown. See the links below:

http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

Once that's done, restart the computer, then open the "run" line, type "msconfig", then press the "Enter" key.. Once the System Configuration Utility loads, then click on the "Startup" tab and UNCHECK any unneeded startup programs listed there. Some of the programs listed there may be necessary .. Others are not needed.. To decide which ones to UNCHECK, see the link below:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Hope this helps.

Works fine here.

But I have a factory installed OS. This issue seems to plague home built machines but let me share what I find most of the time. Said home builders usually have an outdated BIOS and usually have never heard of drivers for the motherboard or other components of their machine. They will also be shocked to learn about firmware for CD/DVD and hard disks may need an update.

I agree that Vista may be too rough for those that build their own today.

I've been having the same problem

I have the exact same problem after the updates. It's really frustrating when Microsoft breaks your computer for you! I haven't found a solution anywhere yet, but I'll keep looking.

one thing i've really liked about Vista...
Jul 21, 2007 2:14AM PDT

so far is the speed of booting up. i have an acer with factory installed Visata 32 bit, and have not had a problem with start up or shutdown as i had with XP. both were always slow on XP. hope your issues get resolved soon. Happy

Hello,

I had the same problem when I bought a new computer last week.
My specs

Intel Core 2 Duo
Windows Vista Home Premium
1 GB RAM
250 GB HD

First I removed all the crap software, Internet security suite, the game demos, etc. Then upped my ram to 2GB. Next tweaked the OS, shutting down completely unnecessary services like indexing. After all was done defraged. Spend a little time educating yourself online you won't believe the results.
I'm booting in just under 20 seconds, shutdown is almost instantaneous. Connection speed is awsome and the list goes on. Vista is 10X what XP was, just needs tweaking and anybody can do it. Good luck and don't give up and you'll see what that intel Duo can do.
