Some folk never come back. There are never any updates to that. What comes with Windows is what you use.
This is not a driver issue.
Try the usual CD lens cleaner, be sure the media is spotless and if that does not clear it up, replace the drive. Your new to PC repair folk will try to save the drive.

My HP Pavilion a6700y Vista desktop displays a "Windows cannot read this cd - disc may be dirty/damaged - turn on error correction" message when I play a music cd. Sometimes, the first track will play about 1 minute before the message displays. This occurs with "store-purchased and burned" cd(s). It plays dvd with no problems. I purchased the desktop used and the drive has "lightscribe. The cd(s) play perfectly on 3 other computers with Windows XP. The driver and IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers have no newer udates.
