Windows Vista Premium using wav & wma formats

Mar 6, 2007 4:51AM PST

I have Windows Vista Premium with Sound Blaster X-Fi Extream Music (D).

If I record with my microphone on my PC the sounds can only be saved as .wma files. (In Windows XP I was able to save them as .wav files). Only Vista Basic & Vista Business are able to save as .wav files all other Vista versions are saved as .wma files.

What I?m trying to do is replace the default sounds such as in aol ?You have mail? or ?Goodbye? etc., with my recorded sounds.

The problem is the Windows Media and AOL default sounds are .wav format and the recordings I make are in .wma format. My sounds show up both in the Windows Media folder and the AOL sound folder but they are not available if I open up the Control Panel Sound Folder.

Is there anything I can do with my recorder (microphone) or do I have to edit them to make my wma files into wav files?

Thank you
Andrew

If you use a program such as Audacity, for instance, you have complete control over what format the recordings are saved in. Just export as a WAV file and you'll be set. Also keep in mind that it is possible to convert from one format to the other, provided the recording is not protected, so it's never 'too late.'

John in a follow up to my initial question and your help, I downloaded Audacity and it worked beautiful making my wav files.

Thank you very much
