Windows Vista, Limewire, and CD/DVD drive problem???

Apr 7, 2007 12:25AM PDT

I bought a new Toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 about 2 weeks ago. It has been running great, I've gotten used to Vista and am really liking it, absolutely LOVE the CD/DVD burner. That being said, I've been carefully downloading programs and software that I normally use (Quicken, Photoshop, etc.) and I installed Limewire Basic because I'm a music nut and I'm permanently attached to my iPod.

Everything was going just fine until two days ago, out of the blue, my CD/DVD drive disappeared from "My Computer" and I got a message in device manager telling me the device could not start. I tried updating drivers, uninstalling and rebooting, looking for solutions online and found nothing except that this device doesn't NEED drivers - it's supposed to be supported by Windows automatically. Even tech support at Toshiba was at a loss for words. I finally backed everything up and did a complete system restore, and the drive reappeared and is working just fine...but now I'm paranoid about downloading Limewire in case it happens again. I have everything backed up on an external drive, but I really don't want to have to do another system restore.

Has anyone else has this problem? Is it common for brand new drives to quit working like that? The drive is a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device. I am thinking seriously about buying an external burner (with lightscribe, why not?) just in case...but I would love to know if this is a common problem with Limewire and Vista.

Thanks for your help!

Kate

yes I have been on the phone for three days with microsoft vista tech pros and with Gateway for the same problem. My computor is only six weeks old, and I cannot play any dvd with media player 11, so they downloaded two different dvd players and neither would load the movies. My model is ts-H652D ATA device. Error code COOD1163 keeps appearing, updated driver, downloaded new codecs, nothing is working. May be the TSST Corp's drivers are not compatible with wmp 11, or the Beta in that program has glitched something, the microsoft experts I've spoken with are just as baffled. Will keep all posted. May 30, 2007 7:55AM PDT

Hi,
i have just been using my brand new evesham windows vista, and last week i installed limewire. this week i tried to play a cd rom and the drive would not work!. i rang up the technical dept and during a 40 min phone call he walked me through trying to rectify it. i had to boot the cd drive. the tech guy asked me to insert my windows vista home basic cd into the drive but i could not cos my dog chewed it the other day(ha ha)!. anyway i am getting another vista cd. my question is, will i lose all my stored information during the process of getting this fixed and if yes, since i do not have an external drive, what is the best and cheapest/easiest way to back up the hard drive. thanks, chidi

Any CD with Restore CD, Recovery CD, System CD (see a pattern) there is a chance we will lose the owner's files.

We must secure those before most if not all OS repairs.

TSST Corp CD/DVDW TS-L632MATA DEV Problem??
Jun 17, 2007 2:53PM PDT

I purchased a new HP Pavilion Laptop w/Vista installed. After about a week I lost the CD/DVD drive. It showed it under the device manager but would not recognize disks. I took it back to Circuit City and they ended up doing a system restore. It worked for about a month after that and all of a sudden it stopped again. I download windows updates and i did install iTunes. I don't want to go through another restore so I have been removing downloads one by one to see if that will work. maybe I will remove iTunes also. I was going to see if I could get Toshiba to download another driver but it sounds like that is not the problem. Thanks for any help you can give.John

Jul 11, 2007 8:04PM PDT

3 weeks ago I bought a new Acer Aspire 9300/7000 laptop with Vista Home Edition preloaded. Took several hours loading all my software, all legal & unit worked fine for several days. Nothing to do with Limewire or Ipods. While running a function (can't remember which one) computer seemed to lock up so cleared via power switch. On startup my drive,CD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device, disappeared, code 039 error. Ended up restoring the whole system & it was OK. Loaded up all my software again, many hours, then tried to use the NTI Backup NOW! 4.7 package to backup my files & system, system locked up again. On start up I lost the CD/DVD drive?????

Same happened to me, and I just installed iTunes. I uninstalled iTunes, and the problem was gone. Had no need to repair or reinstall the driver again. Working properly again.

I also have a windows vista home premium laptop only about a month old and my cd/dvd drive/burner dissapeared. I then went into hardwar manager and found the driver is corrupted. The technical name for the drive is TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device

I have norton 360 and it does not have anything to do with any programs i installed, the driver just got corrupted. If anyone has a driver for a vista home premium (32 bit) TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device driver, please give me a link to where I can install it

Solution...
Aug 13, 2007 5:08AM PDT

Same problem, same hardware... here's how I solved it:

The fault is (apparently) caused by 3rd party CD-burning software installing invalid/faulty "filters" on top of your basic CD drivers. When these go wrong, windows has problems starting the driver successfully.

Fortunately, you can get rid of these filters with a quick registry edit:

1. Run regedit

2. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. Delete the "UpperFilters" entry

4. Delete the "LowerFilters" entry

5. Close regedit

6. Reboot your machine

Voila! - your drive should be back Happy

Yes but ..
Aug 16, 2007 2:17AM PDT

Yes but now your iTunes (or Roxio or Limewire or Nero) software will no longer work. This is the quandry here ... if you edit the registry to remove the keys then the CD/DVD drives will work but the burning software will not. If you reinstall the burning software it will probably replace the registry settings and knock out your drives again. As far as I can see you can choose between one problem or the other. I'd wager that this is intentional by Microsoft to cause problems with 3rd party burning programs (I could never get Nero to work with Vista) and get people to abandon them in favor of Microsoft media player.

How do you roll back the registry
Sep 27, 2007 11:52AM PDT

I tried the delete the registry plan on my home desktop and it worked. I now have the same problem on a laptop. I am a novice here but rolling back the registry sounds better than deleting the registry. How do you do that? I opened the upper and lower filter files but what in there doesn't make any sense to me.

Windows driver compatibility problem
Aug 14, 2007 8:53AM PDT

I agree that this registry edit fixes the problem of retrieving the optical drive in Windows but then your third party software dosen't work. So you have to reinstall the third party software and then the drive disappears again. It's a catch 22. The third party software filters may not be defective or corrupt, it appears to be a Windows compatibility problem. I know that if you go to any Windows XP or Windows Vista forum and search for "CD drive disappears" the same problem has been going on for years with all different third party software from Apple iTunes, Roxio, Nero Burning Rom and no doubt others. It is very unlikely that all these third party drivers and filters are defective or corrupt. Microsoft has not fixed this compatibility problem because most people are just happy to get their drive back after the registry fix and do not complain about it. The Windows compatibility problem is still there when a third party recording software is installed. Microsoft should fix this problem once and for all by update their drivers and filters to work with other software.

tsstcorp cd/dvdw ts-l632d ata driver problem
Aug 27, 2007 3:57AM PDT

I ran into the same problem after installing the HP printer drivers on my HP 6000T laptop. After changing the registry try to install the printer again same thing happened. Its all compatibility issue make sure whatever you are trying to install is compatible with vista or not if not then you have to face the same issue again and again. You better install the update drivers/software.
Welcome to Microsoft world.

What about TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S162A ATA Device
Nov 17, 2007 1:19AM PST

I tried the regedit fix as some say within my computer, as I am running Vista Home Premium, and deleting the upper value, lower value does not appear as I can see.

I can get my dvd to work reading games dvd's and my DVD for windows vista home premium. But I cannot get it to read a DVD that was all ready burned with a lot of pictures and videos on it, as well as other all ready burnt dvd. It doesn't even like to read cd's that have been all ready burnt.

When I type regedit and follow the instructions to it, I get this with 0000 and 0001 underneath it.

Thanks for the fix after Norton did it again
Dec 3, 2007 4:55AM PST

Hi. Every time I'd have to reboot my HP a6200n PC because of another Norton download, I'd loose my DVD/CD disk drives. I went through several fixes with both HP and Norton with each on-line session lasting an hour or more. My fix of choice and one I learned to do for myself, was to roll back several days by hitting F8 during bootup.

Well, after this last failure on Dec.2, rolling back didn't seem to work as my drives were still missing. I came across this register filter fix and it works brilliantly. I no longer fear Norton download restarts, but since my Norton subscription is due to expire soon, I'm going to drop Norton's bad, bad turkey for the Microsoft anti-virus software - probably today. I figure and I hope that MS knows what they are doing when it comes to interfacing with their criminally-bad turkey known to all haters of MS as "Vista Home Premium."

Isn't that ironic - buying more MS crap just to work with their earlier crap? They own the world and there is no regulating their monopoly, so what are we "little people" to do?

Never, never had any problems with XP and I pity the poor people less PC savvy than me who are going to have to go through the hours and hours of fixes I've had to. What a mean trick MS has pulled on us!!

I will keep this fix handy for my friends that may have Vista problems and thanks very much for it.

TSSTCorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D disapearing
Apr 4, 2008 4:25PM PDT

I have been following the problem with the disappearing of the CD/DVDW Drive. I have already gone into the Registry and deleted the Upper and Lower filters. Now I once again do not have the use of my CD/DVDW drive at all. It has disappeared again.

I have an Acer 9410Z Laptop
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium
CD/DVDW drive is a TSSTCorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D

My Laptop is also out of waranty so calling Acer costs lots
I have tried to uninstall Itunes, but still no luck.
Any other suggestions

Hey, cmemusicpro, I thought I was going to have to use my computer as an anchor. I actually was thinking I was going to have to buy a new one.

All the info on fixing the missing cd/dvd worked like a charm. I suggest to any of those folks out there with a code 10 to read post

All right man a personal question all though everyone will read it so I guess it is a public question. What kind of music do you play? As one musician to another I just was curious.
