Windows Vista Cant Connect to Web/Internet

Sep 30, 2010 11:48AM PDT

Hello, i am having a crazy problem. So far i have 2 vista computers, one connects just fine to the internet, and the other not so good.

The connection problem starts when opening a internet browser session, nothing pops up, except for a error message telling me that the address was invaild, and could not connect. But i know for sure that google is spelled correctedly. The only other thing i can saym is that when i used the ping command in CMD, any site that i ping shows up as connecting. It just will not display any "webpage" in a browser.

I really need some help so please respond....

-thankyou

To understand your problem I need more information

for instance, what is the make and model of your modem, and how are your 2 PCs conected to your modem? If they connect through a router, what is the make and model of that?

Internet browser itself

I dont think the modem is the problem, because i cannot connect to any webpage using any router setup. I have taken the laptop to work, and conncected to the wireless and wired network successfully, yet it will not open a webpage. It will download vista update files, using wondows update, but it will not display webpages.

Knowing the make and model of your modem and router

is not idle curiosity, it would indicate the answers to several other questions, for example, are you using ADSL or ADSL2 or Cable Broadband, do you have a fixed IP address or is it allocated by a DHCP server, do you connect to your router/modem by ethernet or by wireless, is the router an integral part of the modem or is it a seperate unit? The fact that you connect via a router was not apparent from your original posting.
Since one of your systems works OK it is obvious that the modem works, the problem was getting the second and any subsequent system to share a single connection to the internet.
If you are on an ADSL connection and have a seperate router rather than an itegrated modem/router the router has to be configured as a bridge because there can only be 1 DHCP server on a Lan and both modem and router have a DHCP server so 1 of them has to be turned off.
I am a very bad typist and so answers to the questions I asked would have saved me a lot of typing.
End of rant!!
I understand from your second post that the laptop connects to your work network and will download updates but still will not display webpages. So here goes again, what browser are you using and have you tried others with the same result? Do you have a firewall on the laptop, which one? Has it been configured to allow your browser of choice to access the web? Does your antivirus have a firewall?
