Windows Vista -- blue screen message -

My daughter's lap computer displayed this message today upon startup.
Told her to try to start it in safe mode, which she did. Did a system restore to 3/28, rebooted, same screen popped up............any ideas on what to do next?
Virus related?

HP laptop with Windows Vista

blue screen on start up with message:
a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Another message:
pacer.sys. driver unloaded without cancelling pending operations, etc.

technical information:
xxxstop;0x000000d4 (0x89D53410, 0x000000ff, 0x00000001, 0x82091edd

then
pacer.sys. driver unloaded without cancelling pending operations, etc.

collecting data, etc.

Error 000d4

Pacer.sys is a Windows program. The error indicates that the program stopped working before it finished doing whatever it was doing. If any programs were installed prior to this error occurring, uninstall them. If this doesn't work, try Restoring to a date prior to the problem.
