Windows Virtual Memory - Help?

Can you suggest a number that would work well? I don't know what the virtual memory should be set at.

At the office, the workstations are set to 1 Gigabyte paging files. Remember that we pay employees by the hour and downtime is expensive so a large paging file was decided upon to keep this issue from costing us.

Also, the servers have the paging file set to 4 Gigabytes for the very same reason.

You may have your own criteria, but there is no true number that I can tell you what to set it to.

Let's say I have 128M of RAM. A XP box will run out of memory continually, so this simple rule is a bad rule.

Let's say I have 4G of RAM. I can't set the paging file to 6G so that's not working either. Besides, the maximum size of the Virtual OS for the 32-bit OSes called Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 is all of 4G so you may as well set the paging file to a few megabyte for that 4G RAM machine.

The 1.5 guideline is from a very very very old Microsoft KB article and should not be dusted off and used in today's world.

I wouldn't have recommended it if I wasn't using it myself. A friend also tried it and was so happy with the results that she sent them the $10 they suggest as a contribution. I use the free program and haven't had any of the problems described at the download.com site. The Cacheman instructions do warn people not to set the parameters by hand unless they know what they're doing---maybe the people who had problems ignored those warnings. There's a wizard for each setting and that's what I've used.
