You should have gotten a CD or DVD disc with most of the drivers on it you need to run the notebook. Other drivers you will need to download again from hp.com for your DV1000 series if you load XP professional from scratch.
You should be able to ask the best way to do this at DV1000forums.com (your dedicated forum -- mine is X1000forums.com) -- You will get better performance starting fresh as you will remove much of the preloaded junk HP/Compaq puts on there...
Hopefully, you got a 5400rpm hard drive instead of a 4200rpm hard drive (up to 50% faster seek time) -- if you did not you may want to put in a 5400 or 7200rpm Hitachi hard drive yourself (see manual) at the same time for best performance .........
