Question

Windows updates fail

Aug 16, 2012 10:53PM PDT

Before including the quoted popup messages, I do want to say that I accidentally corrupted Windows XPSP3, primarily Internet Explorer 8 which is now non-functional along with the Windows Update function button. This may be the cause of the problem given below. It is my understanding that using Windows XP Repair can cause more problems than it solves. Is this issue something that is so critical that I should give it immediate attention or can it wait for a while? Some time in the very near future (on a rainy day) I will be installing a new hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP. Other than the IE8 and update problem everything else seems to be working fine. Your thoughts please.

Clarification Request
Many antivirus apps will block those.

Why? Because they are blocking changes like that. Could be other reasons such as trojan infections.

The corruption of IE8 came about when I tried to uninstall it and put IE7 in its place. The only thing that I would need Internet Exporer would be for MS Updates. I have other browser that I use for everything else. The various malware programs that I use are SuperAntiSpyWare, Malwarebytes, and Avast Pro. Before my stupid uninstallation attempt, I never had this problem.

Answer
Tried Installing Them Manually?

Simply type the Knowledgebase numbers into Google, one at a time, (For example, type: KB2731847 into Google and one of the first links is THIS ONE and you should be able to find a link to Microsoft's download page for each update.. Download the file to your desktop, temporarily disable your antivirus, and run the file. It should install.

Hope this helps.

Was able to download the update but when I tried to run it after disabling Avast, this message came up: KB2731847 Setup Error. KB2731847 installation did not complete. I am not going to worry about it, I'll just have to make time to put in my new hard drive and all of the programs. None of my personal stuff is on this hard drive, just the operating system and other software. Will probably reformat this drive and make it into a slave drive or an external drive.

MS Security Updates
Aug 17, 2012 11:56PM PDT

Hi Grif

A few years ago I had the same, maybe a slightly worse, problem, that is I could download security updates using a non-MS browser but could not install them plus I could not use IE to log onto any secure (https://) sites and my AV was crippled.

This was caused by some sort of trojan that my son had downloaded onto my PC, anyway the only thing I could do to get rid of it was to reformat my C:\ drive.

Have you checked the drive for malware? Run Malwarebytes and Superantispyware yet? If not, it might be worth a try.

Hope this helps.
