Windows updates error

Apr 25, 2004 5:54PM PDT

Over the last week or so my computer has started to reboot itself. I suspected it was a programme trying to run and realised I hadn't had any windows updates for a while. I clicked to get any updates available but keep getting the message "iexplore has caused error in MSHTML.DLL Iexplore will now close" I have tried shutting down and starting again but to no avail. I am running windows ME on my machine and have recently installed broadband. I also had a new hard drive fitted only about 5 months ago. It also reboots itself when my avg comes on to do its daily scan. I have turned off scheduled scans and do one manually every day. Have also scanned on free virus scanners but is showing nothing. Can anyone help???

FYI, there are only two "articles" listed in the Microsoft Library. Good luck.

Thanks for responding. I have tried the link that you put up and it comes up with the same error. I have also tried just going to the microsoft homepage but still the same error. I also tried installing IE over the top but that didnt work either! Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. Are you allowed to copy and paste what it says on those pages for me please?
Thank You
Liz

Another method and the parasite issues.
Apr 25, 2004 10:50PM PDT

1. http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6141-0.html?forumID=8&threadID=18878&messageID=206527 notes the method of downloading IE60.EXE (the full IE/OE package), use of Ieradicator to thorougly remove and reinstall IE/OE.

Many resist this method, but its less work than an OS install. There are other success stories if you look.

2. Parasites can be an issue.

Not a concern of Antivirus programs are the new plague called parasites. Read http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ and consider these can thwart Windows Update.

3. Other items.

While you didn't note it, any add-ons such as firewalls, parental controls or such can interfere. Another simple problem is that the DATE and TIME of the machine is off by month, day or year...

Best of luck,

Bob

At least see if the registering of these files help. Click "Start", and on the "Run" line, type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK. Afterwards, do the same thing for the files, Shdocvw.dll, Msjava.dll, Actxprxy.dll, Oleaut32.dll, Mshtml.dll, and Browseui.dll.

I have now taken off and reinstalled IE which seems to have done the trick and I can now get into the updates page. I am still having a problem though. When I try to get the updates they download nearly to the end and them my computer reboots again so won't let me install them. It comes up as an improper shutdown. I have run regsvr as you suggested then the others but they came up with "what would you like to open it with" so I presume they are running although I havn't much of a clue. I also checked for parasites and it came up with nothing. Thank you all for your help so far. Any more help would be gratefully recieved

''How''?
Apr 28, 2004 1:58AM PDT

I for one, want to download what I want and when I want rather than have the automate windows update option set. To see what patches are available to download, follow these steps:

a. Go to the "Windows Update" web site.

b. In the left pane, under Other Options, if Windows Update Catalog exist, click it and go to step e below, else select Personalize Windows Update.

c. Under Set Options for Windows Update, select the checkbox for Display the Link to Windows Update Catalog under ?See Also?, then click Save Settings.

d. Refresh the Windows Update web site page from the browser Toolbar to ensure the catalog item is listed.

e. In the left pane, under See Also, select Windows Update Catalog.

f. Select Find Updates for Microsoft Operating Systems.

g. Select the operating system and language of your choice.

h. Select Critical Updates and Service Packs.

i. Select all of the patches you?d like to download, then click on Go to download basket to download and place them in a specific folder to do with as you like.
