Windows Updates 2 questions

Aug 14, 2011 2:54PM PDT

Windows Update checked off 11 recommended updates to install and left two unchecked. Both are Microsoft .NET Framework updates -- 2468871, 2533523 -- 27.7 and 37.7 MB.
Why are they not checked if they are listed as important ?
Why do my updates rarely match Carol's list in her monthly Microsoft Bulletin Summary?

Some Are Recommended "Reliability" Updates...
Aug 15, 2011 12:49AM PDT

..and as such, they aren't designated as "important". Still, I selected and installed ALL the recent NET updates on all our machines.. Unfortunately, on older, slower machines, the NET updates seem to take forever to install.. They eventually get there, but it doesn't happen quickly.

Hope this helps.

Just wanted to check in and make sure.......my machine is fast, and it will be interesting to see how long "forever" is when they install Happy

Grif re NET updates install time
Aug 15, 2011 11:30AM PDT

I had included two of the four NET updates with the install of eleven recommended updates.....these last two took eight minutes to install.
Thank you again for your help.

Yep, And You've Got a Newer Computer
Aug 16, 2011 12:56AM PDT

We've got computers here with 1/8 the RAM you have, plus slower processor speeds as well.. I saw a couple machines which took 8 minutes on ONE of the NET 4.0 updates.

Take care.

Yep, I do :).....but..........
Aug 16, 2011 3:31AM PDT

....something weird happened when I booted the computer this morning.....recd a message that Windows Update finished installing updates that were waiting for a restart. I definitely did a restart yesterday to allow the two NET framework updates to install, timed it to be one minute (in addition to the eight minutes), and checked to make sure they were successfully installed. The install date still remains as August 16.

Seen It Before...

I'm not sure why, but it appears like everything goes as required during the first restart, but the after a second restart, it needs to "find itself" again..

Hope this helps.

Correction
Aug 16, 2011 5:40AM PDT

Not that it changes anything important.....but August 15 remains as the date listed for the install, and not today's date of August 16 .......what is important is that it "found itself"....and all is well Happy
Thank you, Grif.

If your click on the description of the update.....it shows "recommended" not "important".

Thank you, Bob, for your reply
Aug 15, 2011 7:24AM PDT

Hi, Bob -- it seems the updates are both "recommended" and "important".....the description of the update may say "recommended", but Windows Update tells me there are 2 "important" updates available Happy Since Windows Update left both updates unchecked, I let them sit there until I investigated further.

One at a time

Another issue that occurs quite often with multiple .NET Framework updates is failed installs. I have found that doing the updates one at a time with reboot after each update reduces the number of failed installs.
