How good, often and /or reliable is windows update site on finding new driver updates? Or would I be better off finding the latest drivers myself? I'm useing XP Home.

"How good, often and /or reliable is windows update site on finding new driver updates?" Sorry, that feature is "bad!"

After helping too many get their sound back after a Windows Update, I will lean to the "bad" side of the meter on this one.

Ok, the reason I asked this is, I have used windows update in past to update my nic and vidieo cards. But the drivers are now 6 months old or more .And after checking Intel and Nvidia web sites there are newer versions listed. So from your post, windows updates is far less than "reliable" on driver updates..

Thanks. Rick

My experience is heavily on 'Bad'. I once updated the driver for my modem, and once for my video card both via Windows Update after it found new drivers. My computer crashed both times. However, compare information at Windows Update and at the manufacturer's web site. The driver from the former is likely to be 'signed' (read reliable ?) while that from the later is unlikely to be so.
